The Public Policy, Manager – Sustainability (EU) will join a growing and dynamic team that works across Europe, Middle East, Africa, India and Asia Pacific, in support of Amazon’s global consumer and digital businesses. Like our business interests, our policy issues are broad, forward-thinking, and driven by what is best for our customers. The International Public Policy team works with a wide range of national, local, and supranational policymakers, industry organisations, and non-governmental organisations across policy issues spanning the consumer and commercial environment, including but not limited to sustainability, digital policy, consumer policy, economic policy, privacy, intellectual property, logistics and tax policy. The role is based in Brussels.
Description: The Public Policy, Manager – Sustainability will join a growing and dynamic public policy team working in the EU and Member States to advance Amazon’s efforts to achieve the Climate Pledge, our commitment to achieve Net Zero carbon by 2040. You will support our broader sustainability agenda which also includes the decarbonization of our logistics and transportation networks and the advancement of the circular economy. You will have experience with the EU legislative process and an understanding of the European Green Deal that will enable you to quickly monitor and report relevant legislative and regulatory activity, evaluate its potential impact, develop positions and execute advocacy strategies. You will draft collateral, support internal business case development and coordinate external advocacy efforts, outreach programs, and key initiatives with a focus on Environment/Sustainability and Governance (ESG) reporting, and the circular economy, including but not limited to recycling, packaging, devices, waste/e-waste, product design and sustainable products. You will work at the intersection of multiple business teams innovating and inventing to advance our sustainability goals where you will ensure that Amazon can proactively shape and respond to key policy initiatives in the EU.
As part of a global public policy sustainability team, you will coordinate with your colleagues working at the Member State level and across the world to establish consistent policy positions, develop shared approaches and communication materials, share knowledge and leverage successful strategies across geographies. You will support Amazon’s Sustainability team and work closely with cross-functional business teams to ensure Amazon is proactively and constructively partnering with the public sector to advance shared sustainability goals.
Basic Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant public policy and advocacy experience, e.g., within corporate public policy and government relations, in public administration, law firm, trade associations or non-governmental organizations.
- A keen working understanding of policy-making processes and government relations, particularly as they relate to sustainability policy.
- Written and spoken fluency in English and proficiency in relevant European language.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of EU policymaking progress and institutions and a track record of success in developing advocacy campaigns and public policy engagement in the EU context.
- Strong knowledge of the European Green Deal, EU Climate Policy, the Circular Economy Action Plan, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and related sustainable governance regulation.
- An advanced degree in a relevant area of study (such as public policy, law, economics, business).
- Experience working at high level and collaboratively in a highly-matrixed environment, alongside teams including Legal, Public Relations and business teams.
- Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- A self-starter who can take general direction and produce specific results.
- Able to coordinate a wide array of internal and external resources to obtain, process, and operationalize information and strategy.
- Strong judgment and decision-making skills.
- Comfort working in conditions of high ambiguity.
