Policy Intern – Based in Brussels

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian organization that works to protect and assist people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence. Purpose of the post

Representing the ICRC to the EU, NATO and Belgium, the ICRC Brussels Delegation aims at, inter alia, understanding and influencing the European Union and NATO’s policy environment and operational priorities in contexts affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence. The ICRC Brussels Delegation is therefore recruiting a Policy Intern to support the delegation in its humanitarian diplomacy engagement on policy and operational matters. The delegation will offer the selected intern the opportunity to learn within a dynamic environment and skilled team, as well as to be exposed to various areas of the ICRC’s humanitarian diplomacy work, including with external interlocutors.

Main assignments

• Following relevant EU and NATO developments (contexts affected by armed conflict, Nexus, International Humanitarian Law, migration, digitalization, …) in the field of work of the ICRC and report internally, including drafting the bi-monthly “EU & NATO Highlights”;

• Supporting Humanitarian Affairs Advisors in conducting ad hoc research and drafting analysis on policy developments of interest to the ICRC in the EU, NATO and Belgium;

• Attending meetings, conferences or events and report internally;

• Supporting with the organization of events as required;

• Following the EU, NATO and ICRC publications and update the Delegation Policy Filing System.

Education required

• Master’s Degree in International Relations, Humanitarian Affairs, Political Sciences, European Studies, or another relevant field;

• Knowledge of EU and the functioning of EU and NATO institutions is an asset;

• Excellent knowledge of English and French, oral and written (incl. drafting skills); knowledge of Dutch is an asset.

• Excellent analytical and writing skills;

• Good communication skills and computer skills;

• Well-organised, with a capacity to work alone and in a team.

• Exposure to a fast-paced diplomatic environment and to how EU & NATO’s policy developments connect to ICRC’s humanitarian priorities

• Enhanced capacity to work within a team, working in collaboration with several colleagues towards a collective objective

• Putting in practice analytical skills and summarizing/drafting capacities

• Better understanding of influencing strategies in complex multilateral settings

Internship supervision

The intern will be supervised, supported and coached by Guillaume Muller, Humanitarian Affairs Advisor.

• Location: Brussels

• Contract: Convention d’Immersion Professionnelle (CIP)

• Remuneration: 829 EUR/month and meal vouchers

• Activity rate: 100%

• Length of assignment: 6 months (possibility up to 1 year)

• Estimated start date: Mid-December 2021 or early January 2022
