The Senior Manager, R&D IT leads the strategic platform and services enabling advanced analytics, visualization, and AI-based intelligent automation across Janssen R&D. The company is strategically looking to differentiate itself in scientific research and development operations by improving the utilization of internal and external data to drive insights and automation opportunities. As part of this strategy, this role focuses on analytical visualization, artificial intelligence, and cognitive automation strategy and delivery across the Janssen R&D IT project portfolio. This role is responsible for developing a platform strategy, driving platform technology investments, supporting business project delivery and the development and scaling of services to support the organization’s growing analytics and intelligent automation demand.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical strategy and decision-making in support of Product Line Owner (PLO) mission addressing the Intelligent Automation, Analytical and Visualization needs of Janssen R&D. Enable business partners to demonstrate data assets to drive sophisticated analytical visualizations, artificial intelligence, and digital automation to optimize business operations and enable breakthrough insights within Janssen R&D. By identifying and delivering technology-based business solutions, it is expected that the team will drive direct business benefit measured by cost, quality and/or compliance to business partner functions across the organization.
- Serve as an inspiring leader in Janssen R&D for Analytical Visualization/ Machine Learning / Cognitive Automation technical domain and be recognized as an authority in the field.
- Own and drive the overall platform roadmap and project portfolio. Steers and runs the process from accepted proposal to client delivery, meeting technical, spend, quality, and timeframe requirements. Integrates across teams and is responsible for the overall delivery timeline.
- Responsible for working closely with Business and Technology Leaders to propose ground-breaking operational efficiencies.
- Seen as a leader with vision while voicing support for Analytics and Cognitive Automation technologies in Intelligent Automation & Analytics roadshows. “Technology specialist” who spans analytical technology solutions implementations. Evaluate key technology trends and their impact on various business processes. Find opportunities for areas where technology provides driven differentiation. Investigate, identify and prototype new technologies.
- Collaborate closely with other Product Line Technology teams (Technology Services, High-Performance Compute, Data Platforms, and Engineering, Design Thinking etc) to execute on various projects.
- Accountable for the Solution Reviews and driving Design decisions, technical approvals across the application area, and alignment of scope for all types of releases in end-to-end product lifecycle.
- Responsible for budgeting and estimation for new projects and maintenance of products, as well as delivering activities on budget, leveraging time on value-driven activities, and ensuring external resources meet contractual deliverables
- Manages and coordinates with external vendor and deployment partners to ensure they meet their contracted deliverables, agreed-upon timelines, and metrics using visualizations to communicate more complex data relationships and trends.
- Manage compliance impacts: IT Security & Risk Management, legal, GxP, SOX, privacy, records management. Address complex problems with broad implications for IT architecture, balancing the often competing needs of standardization and innovation.
QualificationsEducation:Qualifications BA/BS degree or equivalent degree required. Computer related MS or PhD degree preferred.

Experience and Skills:
- At least 7 years related experience with a focus in Analytics
- At least 2 years related experience with Artificial Intelligence
- At least 7 years experience in design, development, and delivery of building scalable data-analytics applications & pipelines leveraging data warehouses/ data lakes/ data lakehouse (such as AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Google, Hadoop stack etc.) to efficiently mine years of historical data (structured and unstructured) and build analytical visualizations and applications.
- Experience leading complex cloud-based computing initiatives (entailing solution deployments at a global scale on platforms such as Cloudera, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure)
- Consistent record of leading enterprise-caliber platform deployments (utilizing technologies such as Sagemaker, Tensorflow, H20.ai, DataRobot, Algortihmia, Domino, Kubeflow, Appian, Azure Machine Learning and coding languages such as R, Python, C/C++ or Java)
- Hands-on technical knowledge of data science platforms and software technology as it’s applied to business process and business strategy.
- Experience working across multiple levels of an organization, leadership skills, creating context around key business drivers and strategic plan.
- Demonstrated ability to work with leaders in developing the overall strategy of analytics services, sophisticated visualizations and user experience.
- Manages, identifies, and executes the best data pull, data analysis and evaluation strategies to address complex business problems via SQL, Alteryx, Tableau, Spotfire and PowerBI. Coaches the team in the best practices of creating analytic visualizations.
- Ability to function independently, receiving high-level and/or strategic guidance; able to self-direct, plan and execute initiatives (projects, programs, strategies)
- Experience driving technology shifts within an organization through assessing as-is position, performing external benchmarking, defining long-term strategy and roadmap, and leading tactical execution
- Demonstrated experience delivering high-quality systems and products/services
- Demonstrated history of active engagement in external partnerships for the purposes of accelerating business partner value through pre-competitive initiatives
- Excellent social, communication, and leadership skills working in a matrixed organization
Preferred
- Experience in applying AI/ML within a pharmaceutical business environment is highly preferred.
OtherWillingness to travel domestic and international up to 30% required.
