Job Summary:
The incumbent is responsible for coordinating activities of Handy bus operations in accordance with available resources and develop drivers’ schedules.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate and schedule the activities for Handy bus operations including: receiving and responding to requests, scheduling and prioritizing resources.
2. Liaise, collaborate and exchange information with outside agencies, caregivers, clients and bus drivers on schedules and excursions.
3. Resolve work problems and recommend measures to improve performance.
4. Train staff in job duties, software, procedures and policies.
5. Coordinate Handy bus drivers and monitor routes to ensure schedules are met and to resolve issues.
6. Prepare reports as required.
7. Assist the supervisor during operational disturbances such as an emergency incident. Maintain radio contact with transit staff and provide support as required.
8. Drive bus to transport passengers or bus to a driver as required.
9. Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
10. Other related duties.

Job Requirements:
Working Conditions:
Majority of the work is performed under normal office conditions. High level of concentration required during incidents with multiple radios and telephones calls occurring simultaneously. Exposure to dirt, oil, diesel fumes, noise and/or weather conditions when driving buses or working at transit sites.
Knowledge and Skills:

  • Grade 12 plus 3 years previous experience in Transit operations; 6 months on-the-job experience.
  • Coursework in general office procedures, customer service and conflict resolution (120 hours).
  • Class 4 Drivers License with written Class 2 and Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Ability to obtain Class 2 driver’s license within 3 weeks of hire.
  • Well-developed customer service, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good multi-tasking and prioritizing skills.
  • Geographical knowledge of the city including local streets, major buildings and complexes, and locations of mutual aid communities
  • Ability to act calmly and with accuracy in decision making and recording of information when dealing with customers.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:
General office equipment including computer skills to operate software programs related to work processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail and communications equipment, etc. Transit software, Transit buses, emergency equipment, e.g. fire extinguisher on buses and building alarm system.
