Food Service I – Alberta Health Services

Your Opportunity:

The South Health Campus (SHC) Wellness Centre (WC) is seeking an organized, collaborative and adaptable Food Service I who enjoys food, cooking and interacting with people. The WC connects patients, staff and communities to information, resources and programs that encourage informed decision making and active participation in health. Under the direction of the WC manager and working collaboratively with the Wellness Kitchen (WK) Consultant and team the Food Service I supports WC/WK operations and programming. As the team works towards new strategic goals, flexibility, collaborative team work and the ability to thrive in changing environments are keys to success in this role. Due to COVID-19 the Wellness Centre is temporarily closed to in-person programming, however, virtual programming is offered. This position will therefore be partially reassigned to support to site entrance screening as well. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: maintenance of a clean, sanitary, organized, safe and well-functioning kitchen area (including cleaning of large and small appliances and storage areas), grocery and supply shopping, food and equipment inventory management (restocking, management of perishable items), in-class teaching kitchen support (supporting facilitators/instructors, preparing ingredients), clerical program support (e.g. preparing program packages), WC front desk reception duties (in-person, phone and email), participant program registration using the online registration system, program promotion material distribution and support, maintenance of the lending library and community service brochures (organizing, ordering, restocking), and clerical duties as needed (photocopying, filing, database updating, event support). Description:

As a Food Service I, you will be responsible for performing a variety of routine tasks associated with basic food preparation in accordance with AHS standards and procedures. Your typical duties may include packaging and portioning food items, preparing food according to set guidelines and menus, serving meals to patients and customers and cleaning and sanitizing equipment, dishes, tables and serving areas.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent. Physically capable to lift food, supplies and equipment up to 46lbs and must be able to push/pull meal carts up to 250lbs. This position requires you to walk and stand on your feet for the duration of your shift.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year full time experience in a food service environment, commercial or household kitchen (other combinations of experience may be considered) within the last 3 years. Minimum 1 year full time experience providing administrative support and/or reception in an office setting. Familiarity and comfort in a grocery store to navigate and accurately shop from a list of grocery items and distinguish between a variety of produce or grocery items with minimal direction. Experience with food inventory management – managing expiration dates, applying FIFO principles, minimizing waste, restocking grocery/kitchen items (small ware, cleaning supplies, other). Familiarity and comfort in a kitchen environment preparing food ingredients, following recipes and utilizing small and large household or commercial appliances (i.e. dishwasher, oven, stove top, microwave). Skill and ability to keep work environments tidy, organized, clean and sanitized as appropriate. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in English in person, by phone and on email. Ability to follow direction from supervisors and manager, and also contribute as a part of a team. Ability to follow established processes, but demonstrate flexibility as required. Intermediate level experience using the following: Outlook (email), Word, Excel, and internet search. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for supply shopping.


Preferred Qualifications:

Grade 12 High School Diploma or above. Minimum 2 years providing administrative support and/or reception in an office setting within the last 3 years. Food Safe Certification. Completion of WHMIS Training.
