Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator – Ontario Excavac

Reporting to the Director, HR/H&S, the Health and Safety Coordinator will support the governance of internal practices aimed at achieving operational excellence, and supports the application of health and safety practices in alignment with the company’s work processes and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines
  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of the Company health and safety program, carry out workplace / job site inspections to ensure compliance with legislation, company policies and customer obligations.
  • Make recommendations and develop corrective actions for non-compliance and ensure follow-up reporting
  • Maintain third party procurement websites such as ISNetworld®, Contractor Compliance, etc.
  • Maintain awareness of amendments to the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations, and make recommendations for their implementation.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of the company’s Quality Management System.

Job Duties

  • Research occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the work place
  • Assist in the development and implementation of health and safety policies, procedures/practices and programs to prevent injury and enhance site safety culture.
  • Advise on improvements in tracking and reporting procedures
  • Monitor adherence to the company safety program by all Ontario Excavac employees and subcontractors
  • Perform job site process compliance inspections including hazard analysis, work procedures, quality assurance, make written reports and recommendations
  • Assist in the identification, development and facilitation of training programs
  • Provide new hire safety orientation
  • Facilitate subcontractor qualification process, audit and monitor subcontractor safety performance to ensure they are meeting site safety requirements
  • Respond to incidents or a request for an assessment, which may lead to further investigation and recommendations for remedial action and necessary follow-up
  • Ensure the timely completion of accident/injury investigations, assist with the implementation of identified corrective actions and facilitate all incident close out meetings.
  • Analyze and report on accident and injury data, identifying the needs for new or modified occupational safety programs
  • Attend and co-chair JH&S Committee Meetings and prepare agendas, minutes recommendations. Coordinate follow-up activities
  • Maintain safety documents and records
  • Assist with Return-To-Work programs
  • Participate in H&S accreditation and performance audits (e.g. COR™)
  • Participate in third-party inspections/investigations such as with The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of company operations
  • Other related duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma/in occupational health and safety. Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) preferred, NCSO designation is also an asset
  • 3+ years’ experience in a similar role within the Construction field (heavy civil or underground utilities preferred)
  • Valid G class driver’s license is required as will be required to travel to job sites
  • Experience with the COR™ accreditation program or ISO 45001 is preferred. Knowledge of ISO 9001 2015 and 14001 is an advantage.
  • Training and knowledge of Lean methodologies is an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret, applicable codes, standards, guidelines and government legislation specifically the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations, Environmental Protection Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, etc.
  • Ability to work in both field and office environments
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written
  • Very organized, proactive with sound planning, prioritization and execution skills
  • A strong passion for fostering a safe work environment
  • Ability to get along well with a variety of personalities and individuals
  • Strong PC skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Able to work under pressure with time constraints
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times

Working Conditions

  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs unassisted
  • Travel as necessary
  • Overtime may be required to respond to emergencies during irregular hours.
