The Role Responsibilities

This role holder is an individual contributor that provides the relevant support to Integration Tribes, Enterprise Technology T&I for Standard Chartered Bank. The Product Owner (PO) is an empowered decision maker, responsible for maximising the business value of the product and the work of the Development Team. A key role in the Agile Scrum framework, the PO owns and manages the product backlog and is ultimately accountable for the successful delivery of the product.

The primary goal in a Product Owner role is to represent the customer to the development team. A key activity is to manage and make visible the product backlog, or the prioritized list of requirements for future product development.

Product Owner is the only person who can change the order of items in the product backlog. One unusual aspect of Product Owner responsibilities is that he must always be available to the development team to answer any questions team members have regarding the customer’s view of how they’re implementing a product feature.

The Product Owner’s role in the organization in the following aspects:

  • Vision / Roadmap
  • Problem statements and scenarios
  • Release planning
  • Needs and feature definitions
  • Customer advocate in dev
  • Defect Management
  • Positioning / Stakeholder Communication

The day to day responsibilities of Product Owner will include:

  • Create, maintain and communicate a clear & transparent product vision, roadmap/release plan, and backlog of work regularly throughout the project’s life cycle.
  • Discuss the expectations and the pain points of the product with all users. Translate these into squad / team backlog items
  • Keep Stakeholders updated on ongoing progress for deliverables, risks and challenges
  • Defines MVP in collaboration with chief product owner (where applicable) and stakeholders
  • Ensure that the Product Backlog always contains enough items to be developed
  • Define the goals of Sprints, bi-monthly and quarterly roadmaps. Based on this prioritise the experiments / user stories based on business value and risks.
  • Approves the acceptance criteria and Definition of Done
  • Clearly communicate priorities, objectives/goals, mission and acceptance criteria to the Agile Delivery Team, ensuring that all members clearly understand items in the Product Backlog, clarifying requirements on behalf of end users where required.
  • Regularly connects with the users and sponsors to keep a check on priority, communicating the development / progress of experiments with Clients that were interviewed for VoC inputs
  • Collaborate and work with other Product Owners to prevent duplication of effort and work across the teams
  • Where required collaborate with Project Managers to coordinate project schedules, budgets, and staffing to support the product rollout / vision
  • Agile Community – Supports the agile transformation together with Agile Working Group and actively participates in communities to share learnings.
  • Contributes in Scrum of Scrums (where applicable) to resolve blockers, propose improvements & discuss lessons learnt.

PO Summary:

  • In essence, the Integration PO is expected to define the Vision, manage the Product backlog, prioritize needs, oversee the development stages, anticipate bank BU client needs, act as the BU primary liaison and evaluate product/service progress.

  • Effectively and collaboratively identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.

Our Ideal Candidate

The incumbent will ideally require a combination of Project Management experience following Agile methodology, specialized in middleware products and clear understanding of functional flows related to Retail Banking, Corporate and Institutional Banking (“CIB”) products (Correspondent Banking, Trade Finance, Securities Services, Corporate Finance, etc…). The goal is to have a diverse team within Integration Services Global Technology team, who have a unique combination of expertise and experience within middleware, messaging queues and related products.

The incumbent will ideally possess the following specific experiences:

  • 10+ years of experience in an international banking environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Middleware systems and/or Messaging Queues and / or 5+ years of experience in API framework and / or Cloud implementation within a global bank.
  • The role holder needs to possess extensive change and programme management experience, ideally gained in a software / infrastructure development environment using Agile ways of Working
  • Product Owner Certification is desired
  • People and process management skills, ability to foster positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders at appropriate level ensuring open collaborative environment.
  • Ability to deliver outcomes efficiently despite complexity and ambiguity
  • Demonstrated relationship building skills – both internal and external across multiple jurisdictions
  • High level of integrity and professionalism
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • High attention to detail
