Job Description

About the Role:

The New York Times Company is looking for a Travel and Events Security Manager, reporting to the Director, Corporate Security. The Travel and Events Security Principal, based in either our New York City or Washington, DC locations, is a new role in the Corporate Security department that will lead the security management for all New York Times events – stateside and overseas – and all corporate business travel.

Responsibilities:

  • Build a standardized travel and event security program across the whole of the New York Times enterprise.

  • Lead and influence security matters and requirements with cross-functional teams to develop and execute security policies, procedures, and practices designed to meet our duty of care for traveling staff, and the needs of Company events.

  • Ensure that best practices in proactive and preventative security measures and contingency planning are integrated into the overall planning process for Company travel and events.

  • Have the willingness and drive to spend 10-20% of your time traveling domestically and internationally to support these programs.

Event Security

  • The Times Center, NYT Events, or other high-level internal and external New York Times events.

  • Attend pre-event walk-throughs and calls with event leads and marketing, and advertising teams, to understand the event and layout, assess the safety and security requirements, and identify the risks, threats, and emergency response planning to develop a customized security plan and deliver security briefings.

  • Coordinate walkthroughs and issuing event security assignments in partnership with internal and external event leads and security partners.

  • Liaise with the third-party contracted security services to communicate performance/event expectations and schedule, no-shows, oversee their performance, and confirm and pay out invoices.

  • Partner with event, venue or hotel security, and local, state, and federal law enforcement to facilitate effective security planning, strategy, and communication and coordination during events and event related emergencies, and to ensure excellent customer service and time-sensitive responses to any emergency/facility support needs.

  • Collaborate, plan, and manage security support for executives, talent and speakers, and government officials during events.

Travel Security

  • Develop a comprehensive travel security program that ensures all staff are informed about potential travel risks and are provided with guidance and assistance for safe travel.

  • Develop, promote, communicate, and train travel security policies and processes across the business to ensure alignment with industry best practice on duty of care and compliance with Corporate business travel requirements.

  • Manage third-party providers, such as travel agencies, insurance companies, and security consultants.

  • Working closely with the New York Times Security Operations Center (SOC), build travel risk assessment, risk ratings, and monitoring capabilities to track global events and provide guidance and assistance to minimize potential dangers to traveling staff.

  • Develop and implement security measures to manage risks for traveling staff, including emergency response plans and evacuation procedures.

  • Build relationships with local authorities, emergency services, other stakeholders in-country, and with industry associations like OSAC.

  • Build and provide regular travel security reporting to the business.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree or relevant and equivalent years of experience.

  • Comprehensive travel and event security risk assessment knowledge and experience in a range of locations, situations, and challenges.

  • Strong evidence of developing travel and event security plans against risk management requirements, liability and compliance considerations, and business objectives.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills, and a willingness to collaborate with diverse, multicultural national and international colleagues in a fast paced environment.

  • Proven experience in building and managing teams in a change management context.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years experience with a combination of travel management, emergency response, and security management experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in emergency management or homeland security.

  • Experience in media or entertainment.

  • Involvement in security focused industry organizations such as OSAC or DSAC.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $125,000 – $135,000.
