Full Job Description

The New York State Legislative Bill Drafting Commission is actively seeking applications for their open positions as Proofreaders.

Qualified candidates would be responsible for reading and comparing the various types of legislative documents processed by LBDC to verify the law and ensure that all such documents are error-free.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Comparing with existing law, proofreading, and accurately marking corrections in any legislative drafts, bills, Senate or Assembly and Concurrent Resolutions, and second readers.
• Reviewing new material in such documents for sense, spelling, format, and style
• Reading and preparing for the processing of camera-ready bills, session and slip laws
• Proofreading outside legal publications to verify that such text is a correct transcript of the law
• Proofreading and updating the consolidated law, unconsolidated law and New York Codes, Rules and Regulations databases

Additional responsibilities can include other tasks as assigned.

Education requirements and personal/technical skills/abilities and/or physical demands should include:

• High school diploma or the equivalent required
• Must be able to read and comprehend the English language
• Must have strong audio, oral, grammar, and spelling skills
• Must be able to read out loud clearly, accurately, and for long periods of time
• Must be able to concentrate and maintain attention to detail for long periods of time
• Must be available to work nights/weekends during Legislative Session, as needed
• Must be able to work with a diverse range of people
• Must be able to read and hear sexually explicit terms and language as such language occasionally appears in statute or proposed law
