Job Description

Orion is NASA’s next spacecraft to send humans further into space than ever before, beyond the Moon and even to Mars. The European Service Module (ESM) is Airbus‘ contribution to this ambitious program. The ESM provides electricity, water, oxygen and nitrogen as well as navigation and temperature control. Moreover, the Orion ESM contains one of the most complex propulsion subsystems ever built in Europe. The 1st ESM is fully accepted and qualified and will soon be launched as part of NASA Artemis 1 mission and ready to bring the Crew Module 80,000 km beyond the Moon. With the 2nd ESM, which will fly humans to the Moon, Airbus DS builds the first ‚human transport rated‘ vehicle in Europe, maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality. Airbus DS is further in charge for the next European Service Models ESM-3 to ESM-6, that make an orbital station ready for permanent habitation.

For this exciting program we look for the Team Leader – Orion Major Spacecraft delivery (MSD) Propulsion Subsystem (d/f/m) within Airbus Defence and Space in Bremen. Being part of the department „Space Exploration propulsion & Fluids“ the Orion MSD Lead Propulsion Subsystem operationally reports to the Orion ESM Project manager respectively the Orion ESM program manager.

As an overarching task the Team Leader – Orion MSD Propulsion Subsystem (d/f/m) is accountable and supports the full-life cycle of the propulsion system for man-rated spacecraft; defining and/or overseeing the design, development, qualification & acceptance, integration, and operation of the system and its components, interfacing with the Orion ESM program management & system engineering team.


The detailed tasks and responsibilities of Team Leader – Orion MSD Propulsion
Subsystem (d/f/m) (PSS) in the frame of the propulsion subsystem organisation are as follows:

Be accountable for the delivery of the Orion ESM propulsion subsystem (PSS) and its equipments on Quality, on Cost, on Time in cooperation with internal and external subcontractors as well as cooperation partners with the aim to guarantee a smooth project workflow.

  • Ensure the Qualification and Acceptance of the system (including H/W and documentation delivery and coordination of H/W incoming inspection for handover to Assembly Integration Test (AIT)
  • Foster professional and trustful relationship with ESA
  • Act as a single Point of Contact (PoC) for the respective propulsion subsystem
  • Ensure the compliance with planning figures and initiation of corrective steps in the event of deviations in consultation with the program/project

Execute the Project:

  • Lead the MSD Propulsion Subsystem Multi-Functional Team
  • Provide effective organizational and communication structure
  • Ensure availability of correct skills and knowledge in MFT in conjunction with Business Line Management
  • Implement lessons learnt and improve efficiency on a regular basis

Drive the technical compliance:

  • Manage the technical baseline (incl. flow down to the subcontractors in interface with the Chief Engineer and ESM procurement team) and ensure technical compliance to the requirement baseline
  • Drive the resolution of all technical problems within the MSD (Non-conformances & waiver)
  • Highlight topics that may affect system or other MSDs
  • Support in the compilation of system requirements and system architectures in consultation with systems engineering for the development and program/project management
  • Examination of requested requirement changes of Orion ESM with regard to economic feasibility in consideration of the required technologies
  • Ensure the compilation of system integration, test and trials

Manage the schedule:

  • Ensure the setup and maintenance of PSS MSD schedule (Quantity structure, time schedule, resource assignment) subject to internal Orion ESM specifications.
  • Monitoring adherence to this planning, proposal and initiation of corrective steps in the event of plan/actual deviations in consultation with the responsible program/project team.

Manage the costs & order processing:

  • Ensure the monitoring of adherence to the assigned budget on the basis of an internal bid notification of cost overruns and cost of non-quality in cooperation with the responsible units and the project/program management as part of biannual EAC (estimate at completion) and monthly progress reporting
  • Proposal and initiation of corrective steps in the event of plan/actual deviations, preparation and explanation of cost schedule reporting for approval in the frame of biannual estimate at completion and monthly reporting cycle
  • Approve programmatic milestone achievements of PSS subcontractors in interface with the procurement team
  • Ensure the processing of agreed change notice contracts according to cost, quality and time in cooperation with internal and external subcontractors as well as cooperation partners with the aim to guarantee a smooth project workflow. Ensure the compliance with planning figures and initiation of corrective steps in the event of deviations in consultation with the program/project management

Acquisition and change implementation support

  • Develop cross-functional expense estimations regarding the development and manufacturing costs as well as the preparation of specifications in accordance with the systems technology of the development and program units
  • Aim is the technical support of Sales and Systems Engineering in the acquisition phase in order to create a basis for the development of offers or contract change notes by the respective bid team
  • Support negotiation of changes notes with the customer
  • Implementation and execution of agreed PSS scope changes on Quality, on Cost, on Time

Manage the Risks & Opportunities:

  • Ensure the performance of ongoing risk and opportunity management in the course of project management with the aim of proactive recognition of optimization potential and minimization of risks. Deduction and implementation of respective measures in consultation Orion ESM project team, the line management and the effected units


Experience:

  • Project Management as part of medium sized phase C/D space project (preferably of propulsion subsystems) with on Quality, on Cost, on Time accountability

  • Experience within the domain of subsystem development projects; preferably within chemical propulsion systems; Design, development, qualification, integration, and/or operation of sub-systems and their components under man-rated flight systems & associated safety processes

Additional skills:

  • Project Management experience, ideally with Certification Bronze

  • Ability to lead a large multi-national team organization in a complex project environment

  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills and social competence

  • Work style characterized by autonomy, initiative, cooperation & collaboration

  • Experience with ESA and NASA is a plus

  • Experience in mission and safety critical applications
