Assistant Professor in Data Reporting

Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time Assistant Professor faculty appointment in data reporting, with a primary regional focus on Arab countries, to be appointed in the Journalism and Strategic Communication program.

We seek candidates with strong and recent industry experience and a demonstrated record of successful professional practice, preferably in newspapers, who are experienced with the methods of data journalism, both in newsgathering and storytelling, including data processing, analysis, and visualization. A knowledge of the legal and ethical issues in investigative reporting is also preferred, including familiarity with cybercrime and other content-based laws in the West Asia and North African region, particularly Arab countries. Candidates who hold a Master’s or Ph.D. and who are experienced with multinational investigative data journalism projects, particularly involving countries in the Global South, are also preferred. Candidates are expected to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate education and program development.

In addition to significant and recent industry experience and a strong record of high-quality professional practice, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Responsibilities include teaching courses in their discipline and elective courses that speak to their field of practice, as well as contributing to NU-Q’s curricular demands. These will include teaching foundational courses in reporting and journalistic storytelling, newspaper writing, and long-form journalism; mentoring students in program-related journalism projects; and offering courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, Middle East Studies, Media and Politics, and Strategic Communication.

NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language would is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region; women; and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.
